The Department of Physics at Gebze Technical University was established in 1994 and offers education at the Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral levels. The department began accepting undergraduate students in 2002 and has since been offering an experimental-oriented education program with well-equipped Undergraduate Student Laboratories and an experienced academic staff in experimental work.

The department, with its young and dynamic academic staff, provides modern laboratory facilities and fosters an educational environment that is based on scientific, ethical, and societal values.

Educational and Research Programs

Bachelor’s Program

In the undergraduate program, students engage in fundamental physics courses alongside experimental laboratory practices. These labs offer practical training in areas such as classical mechanics, optics, electricity, and modern physics. Additionally, all research laboratories are actively used for graduation projects and graduate-level research activities.

Master's and Doctoral Programs

The Physics Department is well-equipped with advanced laboratory facilities to support the research activities of graduate students. These programs provide students with advanced education, typically covering topics such as smart materials, nanotechnology, energy applications, computational material physics, nano-devices, optoelectronics, quantum optics, and photonics.

Furthermore, with the contribution of TÜBİTAK UME, a Metrology Master's Program has been established. This program, designed to train highly qualified expert researchers in the field of metrology and to support interdisciplinary research on measurement standardization, covers measurement techniques used in priority research areas of Turkey, such as nanotechnology, biomedical engineering, and renewable energy technologies.

Research Areas of the Department

The research conducted in the department aligns with current scientific and technological advancements, and the focus areas include:

  • Smart and Innovative Materials
  • Energy Applications
  • Computational Material Physics
  • Nano-devices and Sensors
