Gebze Technical University Earth and Marine Sciences Institute (GTU-YDBE) was established on October 21, 2014, with the law no 6562. After completing the necessary infrastructure and personnel studies, the Institute started active studies on the Çayırova campus in August 2018. In this direction, the Earth and Marine Sciences Doctorate Program was opened in 2021.

The research area of the institute covers the whole world and can be summarized under the following 3 main headings;

The focus is on the protection, monitoring and sustainable use of water resources, including the oceans. For this purpose, an integrated approach is adopted in which atmospheric events such as climate change are also taken into account.

In addition, the soil, which is one of the most basic elements of the earth system and the intersection point of the hydrosphere, atmosphere and biosphere, is also considered as a natural resource and scientific studies that take care of its unknown aspects and protection are included.

To facilitate the understanding of the earth and human systems in order to develop viable, scientifically-based, human-centered solutions to build resilience to natural disasters, and to produce sustainable solutions to our planet's most pressing environmental problems.

Main working areas;

  • • Monitoring of surface and groundwater in terms of quality and quantity
  • • Monitoring of sediment quality and ecological changes in rivers, lakes and seas
  • • Monitoring and modeling of climate change and extreme weather events
  • • Investigation of the effects of mining sites and land use changes on water basins
  • • Investigation of the earth's crust structure with seismic methods, ground investigations
  • • Identification of active faults, earthquake risk studies
