RECOGNITION OF FORMAL EDUCATION
Transfer Students
It is only possible to recognize formal prior learning of transfer students from different universities under the coordination of the “Adaptation Commission” according to the relevant regulations set by The Council of Higher Education (YÖK). The courses taken from other universities during former education are recognized and their grades are included into the transcript of records/diploma supplement provided that the Adaptation Commission accepts their conformity to the related degree program. The recognized courses are shown as transfer course and symbolized with the letter “T”.
Students who have studied a short-cycle program and are qualified by the Turkish Council of Higher Education to further their education at a related first-cycle program must take Language Proficiency Test. Those who have passed this test start their undergraduate education. Those who have not succeeded in it attend the compulsory English preparatory course. If they succeed in the Language Proficiency Test at the end, they can take undergraduate courses. If they do not succeed, then they can take this test twice within the following academic year without taking undergraduate courses during that academic year. If they cannot pass this test till the end of that academic year, they are dismissed or guided to apply for universities without any preparatory language course through Student Selection and Placement Center. Students who are qualified to take undergraduate courses are exempted from the compulsory courses required by the Turkish Council of Higher Education. Those students are registered for the first year of studies at the related first cycle program. The exempted courses are symbolized with the letter “EX”.
Exemption of Language Proficiency
Students who have taken formal, informal or non-formal language education before their acceptance at GTU under- or post-graduate programs are exempted from preparatory class provided that they take and succeed in language proficiency test organized by Department of Foreign Languages. The success in this test is shown in the transcript of records as exempted course and symbolized with the letter “EX”.
NON-FORMAL AND IN-FORMAL LEARNING
Recognition of prior non-formal and in-formal learning is at the beginning stage in Turkish Higher Education Institutions. Gebze Technical University and the Department is not an exception to this. However, exams of exemption are organised at the start of each year at the University for the courses of English Language. The students who have completed the proficiencies for these courses on his/her own or through other means, and believe that they have achieved the learning outcomes specified are given the right to take the exemption exam. The students who achieve a passing grade from these exams are held exempt from the related courses in the curriculum.
