The prior education of students before enrolling in the Department of Chemistry at Gebze Technical University (GTU) is reviewed by the Undergraduate Exemption and Adjustment Committee in accordance with the relevant regulations of the Higher Education Council (YÖK). Courses taken at other universities during prior education are recognized and recorded in the transcript if deemed appropriate for the program by the committee.
Vertical Transfer Students:
Students who are admitted to the Department of Chemistry through vertical transfer are required to take an English proficiency exam. Those who pass the exam begin their undergraduate education, while those who fail must attend a mandatory English Preparatory Program for one year. Students who fail to complete the preparatory program successfully within this period are granted an additional year. During this time, students cannot attend undergraduate courses and are only allowed to take proficiency exams. Students who fail the proficiency exam at the end of the second year are dismissed from the university. In such cases, students may apply to universities where English education is not mandatory.
Lateral Transfer Students:
Internal lateral transfers within GTU can be made between undergraduate programs starting from the third semester and up to the fifth semester. Quotas for internal transfers are determined by the relevant administrative boards. To apply for a lateral transfer between programs admitting students with the same or a different central placement score type, students must have successfully completed all courses taken to date and must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 out of 4.0.
For transfers from other higher education programs to GTU, lateral transfer quotas for the second and third years are determined annually by the Higher Education Council (YÖK). However, additional quotas may be set by the relevant boards of faculties, schools, or vocational schools. The results of inter-institutional transfer evaluations are announced on GTU’s website, listing all eligible applicants ranked by the scores used in the evaluation.
Preliminary evaluations of applications are carried out by committees formed by the relevant administrative boards within the framework of principles set by the university senate. Applications are assessed based on candidates’ cumulative GPAs and at least 40% of the ÖSYS/YKS scores from the year they were admitted to higher education in the relevant program’s score type. Transfers are granted based on the allocated quota. Other eligible candidates who meet the success criteria are listed as alternates in rank order. If primary candidates do not apply within the specified time, applications are accepted from alternates.
International Student Admissions:
Applications from international students to the Department of Chemistry are announced annually on GTU’s website. Candidates may select up to three departments. During the placement process, TR-YÖS, SAT, and national exam results are taken into account. High school graduation exams have no validity period, while university entrance exam results are valid for two years. Applications are evaluated by the GTU International Student Admission Committee, and the results are published on the university’s website.
Foreign Language Exemption:
Students who have received prior foreign language education can be exempted from the preparatory program if they pass the proficiency exam administered by the GTU Department of Foreign Languages. Students who score at least 65 on the English proficiency exam are considered capable of following the English-medium undergraduate program.
