EXAMINATION, REGULATIONS AND ASSESSMENT

In addition to midterm examinations and other assignments, students are required to take a final examination. The student is given a grade by the course instructor, based on the midterm examinations, final examinations, the semester‘ s work and attendance. All grade averages are converted into two lettered scale- AA, BA, BB, etc.

Courses which do not require midterm and / or final examinations are determined by the department concerned, and the Registrar's Office is informed accordingly. Under these circumstances, the semester grade is given by evaluating the work done throughout the semester.

The practical and / or laboratory components may be evaluated separately. In this case, the course and practical and / or laboratory sessions taken separately must fulfill the above regulations.

GRADING SCHEME AND GRADE DISTRIBUTION GUIDANCE

A student who receives a grade of (AA), (BA), (BB), (CB), or (CC) in any course will be considered successful. Grades of (DC), (DD), (FD), (VF) will indicate failure. For each course taken, the student is given one of the following grades by the lecturer:

GTU PERCENTAGE GTU GRADE POINTS GTU COURSE GRADE ECTS
91-100 4.0 AA A
85-90 3.5 BA B
80-84 3.0 BB C
70-79 2.5 CB D
65-69 2.0 CC E
55-64 1.5 DC FX
40-54 1.0 DD --
39 and below 0.0 FF F
Failed without midterm exam 0.0 FF NA (No Attendance)

Grade Point Average (G.P.A.): The students have both a Grade Point Average (G.P.A.) and a Cumulative Grade Point Average (C.G.P.A.) that are announced at the end of each semester by the Registrar's Office. The total credit points for a course are obtained by multiplying the grade points by the credit hours. In order to obtain the G.P.A. for any given semester, the total credit points earned in that semester are divided by the total credit hours.

Cumulative Grade Point Averages (C.G.P.A.): The sum of total credit points earned in all the courses that the student has taken is divided by the sum of all credit hours to calculate C.G.P.A.

Conditional Grade Point Average: Students with a cumulative grade point average of at least “CC/2.00” are considered successful even if they have received a grade of “DC” or “DD” provided that their conditional grade point average is “CC/2.00” for that semester. Grades received in cultural courses, such as Foreign Languages, Turkish, Principles of Atatürk and The History of Turkish Revolution, Physical Education, Music or Art will not be taken into consideration in figuring out the conditional grade point average and the students cannot pass these cultural courses by conditional grade point average.

T (Transfer) : Reflects the courses transferred from other universities. The (T) grade is included in computing the Grade Point Average (G.P.A.).

EX (Exempt) : Reflects the courses that have been exempted. The (EX) grade is not included in computing the Grade Point Average (G.P.A.).
