  RECOGNITION OF FORMAL EDUCATION

Transfer Students

It is only possible to recognize formal prior learning of transfer students from different universities under the coordination of the “Adaptation Commission” according to the relevant regulations set by The Council of Higher Education (YÖK). The courses taken from other universities during former education are recognized and their grades are included into the transcript of records/diploma supplement provided that the Adaptation Commission accepts their conformity to the related degree program. The recognized courses are shown as transfer course and symbolized with the letter “T”.

Exemption of Language Proficiency

Students who have taken formal, informal or non-formal language education before their acceptance at GTU under- or post-graduate programs are exempted from preparatory class provided that they take and succeed in language proficiency test organized by Department of Foreign Languages. Second cycle students who have a bachelor degree in totally English, or who have received a minimum score of 55 from UDS/KPDS, of 55 from TOEFL IBT, of 5.5 from IELTS within the last three years are exempted from language proficiency test. Students who have once taken and passed this language proficiency test by Department of Foreign Languages within the last three years are also exempted and do not have to take the test again. This success/exemption is shown in the transcript of records as exempted course and symbolized with the letter “EX”.

  NON-FORMAL AND IN-FORMAL LEARNING

Recognition of prior non-formal and in-formal learning is at the beginning stage in Turkish Higher Education Institutions. Gebze Technical University and the Department is not an exception to this. However, exams of exemption are organised at the start of each year at the University for the courses of English Language. The students who have completed the proficiencies for these courses on his/her own or through other means, and believe that they have achieved the learning outcomes specified are given the right to take the exemption exam. The students who achieve a passing grade from these exams are held exempt from the related courses in the curriculum.
